Drawings of Historic Monterey 1936-1937.

Collection consists of 59 drawings done in pen and ink wash, pastel, and pencil. The subjects are 19th century historical buildings, scenes, and people in Monterey County, including San Juan Bautista. The first 34 drawings are in color showing buildings, houses, supplemental structures, street scenes, and Mexican era couples and ornaments, followed by 10 ink drawings of scenes and historical people; and then 4 sheets (one in pastel and three in pencil) of some of M. DeNeale Morgan's ancestors. The last 11 drawings are in pencil of houses in Monterey and one in San Juan Bautista.

Mary DeNeale Morgan was born in San Francisco in 1868. In her youth she was a pupil of the painter William Keith, until his death in 1911. She also studied at the Oakland School of Design and briefly taught art at Oakland High School, while maintaining her own studio. In 1909 she moved to Carmel, where she lived the rest of her life. She studied with William Merritt Chase in the summer of 1914 and was the director of the Carmel School of Art from 1917-1925. She was a founding member of the Carme...
